Scotland is great scenic wise, most places are beautiful, but some are less interesting, for me at least.
Barra and Harris are rather nice, South UIst, Benbecula, North Uist and Lewis are way less attractive. They are most flat and not a lot of interesting sites to visit. But be clear I might be spoiled already :-).
What did I like best?
- Visit to Dualchas Architects
- The Polochar Inn, great food, very nice people
- St. Kilda, very special place (even with bad weather)
- Askernish Golf (something we do not have)
What did I dislike?
- Actually not a lot, but a few people in the Stein Inn were not so friendly, some others were BTW.
Which activity was best?
- The day trip to St. KIlda
Best overall day?
- Again the day trip to St. KIlda
- 8 out of 10, great score, but …
Next Summer Holiday (when I will become 55)
- Almost 100% sure, going back to Nova Scotia, so also bit Scottish :-)
But I am back after > 6 hours delay, flight was fast though 1 hour 40 minutes.
That is what I thought, see the other entry …
This morning had a great breakfast at the Braemore Square Guest House. Ed en Wendy were treating me like a VIP, actually they will treat anyone like that :-).
Had scrambled eggs with salmon, own catch, from their “own” river. They have 48 acres of land and the own 1,5 Miles of the river running through and they do catch a lot of salmon.
It is a pity I only stayed for one day, this B&B is a real treat, close to the action, perfect in hospitality and remarkable breakfast.
At time of leaving Ed told me I had to see the nearby “gorge”, so I did in the early morning and in the mild rain. It was spectacular.
After the visit I drove to Inverness airport to return the car. I have to tell a little bit about that as I drove for the last 12 days with a very serious crack in the front window. The guy who checked was not very surprised, seems to happen more often, due to the loose chippings on many roads, especially on Skye this time. Hope it is insured ….
As always I was early, so now have ages to do nothing really as there is not a lot to do, almost no flights arriving or departing. We all got a voucher of 7.50 Pounds, yeah, to spend on food/drinks. Well I will sue them to the bones :-) to get more money as I even had to pay 30 pounds for the luggage, not at Schiphol though (mistake?). I had 21 Kilo’s (due to the Whisky ….?) and if not taken out some stuff had to pay an additional 12 pounds for that one Kilo. Are they so stupid? This Kilo is coming on board anyway, I am not throwing away anything, I only have more hand luggage now …
So after 3 calls with first 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and finally 1 hour delay, they told us, the flight is delayed forever in this plain, so a new one (not sure from where) will come in and hopefully will fly out at 19.00. BTW this is FLY.BE ….
Long day ahead ……
Plain broke down … new plain coming in, new departure time now 19.00, that is 6 hours delay … :-(.
In the morning I had a good coffee with the cleaning lady and her mother in the B&B. Had Indian :-) lunch, good for a change, and afterwards went to the ferry to check in. Smooth ride. And seeing Ullapool and the scenery did good. As Lewis, nor Stornoway are rather spectacular, this part of the mainland is, and Ullapool itself is a very nice town. Was 2 years ago also 2 days near Ullapool and traveled to the Summer Isles, seeing many seals.
Almost in Ullapool.
Docking, the tall ship is from Bergen, Norway.
I arrived at the Braemore Square Country House and got a warm welcome from Wendy. It is a great house and my room is very nice and comfortable.
"Midge Alert" though, as she directly mentioned … outside I saw some, they did not get me yet :-).
When I arrived Wendy was baking her own bread, so will have to taste that tomorrow. Had to tick what I want for breakfast tomorrow, I chose the Braemore Special, scrambled eggs and local smoked salmon.
Went back to Ullapool for dinner and had to share a table with some others, as it was very busy at the Seaforth Seafood Bar. I joined a German couple, much younger, first time pregnant, very enjoyable, great conversation and no not about football :-).
I am back at the B&B now, after taking some nice pictures of Ullapool
got me a nice beer offered by Ed and writing my almost last Scottish entry.
The Braemore Square Country House in Wester Ross near Ullapool is my next and last stop.
Will leave by ferry to Ullapool this afternoon, meeting 2 of the surgeons from the day before yesterday again. They are on their honeymoon in their own country, going up north to Durness. This route I took 2 years ago the other way down. A very impressive and scenic route along the coast.
Had a great stay in the Stables in Stornoway. If you ever are at Isle of Lewis and are with one or two people and want to have a self catered apartment, this is a great stay. Perfect bed and shower, everything else is available and it is in the middle, although at a very quiet street in the center. Just a few meters from the restaurants and the harbour.
So nothing to report …. watched some tennis.
